Zaum! brings together contemporary artists who continue to explore new directions through the language of painting, or reference to it. We will also be showing a work by the late Sir Terry Frost who was a pioneer in British Abstraction.
Zaum! takes its name from an experimental language that breaks the limits of written and spoken word, first used in the 1913 Russian Futurist opera Victory over the Sun. Rejecting grammar and fixed meaning, Zaum embraces chance and disorder to open new creative possibilities. Also, Malevich’s Black Square first appeared on the stage curtain of the opera, marking a shift toward spontaneous, uncodified abstraction—where colour and form communicate beyond logic. Meaning was reshaped through rupture and reinvention, balancing not knowing with deliberate action.

You Shed Your Names With The Seasons takes its title from a line in the 1969 song Duchess by Scott Walker (from the album Scott 4) . Combining five distinctive approaches to drawing faces and the figure, the exhibition presents a series of drawings that explore heads in transition, capturing identities that are not fixed. Developed from diverse processes, including grids as a way of transcribing information, working from life or adapting found imagery. Surfaces are built from marks that accumulate and dissolve, suggesting faces in a state of flux or multiple possibilities rather than a single, stable likeness.
